Once upon a time, not too long ago, stepping away from your desk and opting to work from home was seen as a bit of a novelty. Thanks to rapid technological advancements and a global pandemic, however, the concept of remote working transformed into the new norm with unprecedented speed. As delightful as it sounds to skip the commute and work in your comfortable home clothes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can become a challenge in this less conventional environment. Thus, it is critical to make purposeful actions in order to stay healthy and active while working from home.

To start with, consistency is key. Establishing a routine not only aids in structuring your day, but it also helps to create a psychological barrier between work and personal life. I found this out the hard way. There was a period where I was simply rolling out of bed, flipping open my laptop and diving straight into work. It was, without a doubt, a recipe for disaster. Gradually, however, I realised the importance of setting a clear boundary between professional and personal life and developed a schedule that mimicked my pre-quarantine office hours. Studies support this notion, indicating a strong correlation between stability in daily routines and improved physical and mental health.

Staying Active: Movement Is Medicine

Staying physically active is crucial while working from home. As someone who is always glued to the screen, I’ve learned it’s not always easy. However, integrating movement into your daily routine, whether it’s a high-intensity workout, a quick yoga session, or even a stretching break throughout the day, can go a long way in enhancing productivity and reducing stress. Research from the Mayo Clinic suggests that physical activity stimulates brain chemicals that make you feel happier, more relaxed and less anxious.

Remember to Rehydrate!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! It’s so easy to forget to drink water when you’re engrossed in work. I’ve often caught myself feeling sluggish and realized it’s because I hadn’t had a water break in hours. Water doesn’t just quench your thirst – it’s crucial for the proper functioning of your body, aiding digestion, eliminating toxins and helping the brain function. So, keep a water bottle next to your workspace, to remind yourself to drink!

Healthy Eating is Critical

When the kitchen is just a few steps away, it’s tempting to mindlessly snack throughout the day. I know this all too well from the countless times I’ve found myself reaching for potato chips when stress levels are high. However, choosing healthier alternatives like fruits, vegetables or nuts, can provide the nutrition your body needs for sustained energy levels and optimal brain function. According to Harvard Health Publishing, foods rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can even help combat inflammation and support a healthy immune system.

Don’t Forget to Relax and Unwind

In conclusion, while challenging, maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle is indeed possible while working from home. At the end of the day, it’s important to unwind and disconnect from work. Personally, reading a book, cooking my favourite meal or simply tuning into my favourite TV show are instant mood boosters. Ultimately, keeping your body healthy and your mind happy should always be a priority. As we adapt to the ever-evolving changes, these strategies can help us navigate this ‘new normal’ together, while becoming the best versions of ourselves.
