Exploring the World While Working Remotely

There’s a new trend sweeping across the global business landscape. It’s the freedom to work from any corner of the world, while still maintaining full connection and engagement with your work. The transition from traditional desk-bound, 9-5 jobs towards the flexible, remote work lifestyle has rapidly transformed how we perceive traditional career paths. Yet, as a veteran digital nomad of five years, there’s a lot more to this lifestyle than just scenic backdrops for Zoom calls. Upon embarking on this journey, I quickly realized that this was not just a professional shift, but also a personal reinvention. Free from the shackles of a specific location, I was now not only a marketer for a successful tech start-up; I was a world traveler. Furthermore, for me, it wasn’t about working tirelessly all day in a paradise location. Instead, it was about finding balance, nurturing personal growth while continuously staying updated with work.

Seize Opportunities As They Come

Once you’ve taken the plunge and decided to be a digital nomad, opportunities will probably come at you fast. In my case, they certainly did. I remember during my first year, because of a rapidly approaching deadline and a flight delay at Jakarta airport, I found myself cobbling together a market strategy in the unlikeliest of offices – the crowded corner of a bustling Starbucks. On the other hand, I have also had the privilege of drafting client emails while lounging on the sandy beaches of Aruba. One thing is certain in this lifestyle; there is never a dull day. To put it another way, this is the embodiment of the phrase “making the world your oyster”. Over the years, I have seen jaw-dropping sunsets in Santorini, tasted authentic sushi in Tokyo, and traced history in Rome’s cobblestone streets – all while staying fully committed to my job. These enriching experiences have shaped me, both personally and professionally, in ways the four walls of an office never could.

But Wait, It’s not all Rainbows and Butterflies!

At this point, I think it’s pivotal to say that working while globe-trotting isn’t always as glamorous as it sounds. Unstable internet connections can make video meetings a tricky process, and time zone differences can sometimes mean late-night or early-morning meetings. If you’re not careful, the line between work and leisure can blur, causing burnout. For example, I recall a time in Prague. It was my first week there, I had just begun exploring the stunning gothic architecture the city is famed for. However, due to a product launch back at the company, I ended up working 12 hour days, missing out on many planned excursions. This was a valuable lesson for me. It taught me the importance of clear and open communication, setting work boundaries, and respecting my personal time.

Plan to Succeed

To truly reap the rewards of a remote working lifestyle, careful planning is a must. Reliable and fast internet connection is your lifeline. Make sure you prioritize that when picking your accommodation. Accommodations like those listed on Airbnb often mention the quality of their WiFi. Also, there are co-working spaces available in most cities around the world enabling you to network while having a reliable place to work. For instance, I used the services of Coworker to find credible co-working spaces wherever I went. It became a safe haven for me to stay productive while meeting fellow digital nomads. Moreover, it’s essential to plan your schedule around the time zone of your company headquarters to ensure a seamless workflow. Tools like The Time Zone Converter and World Time Buddy can be a tremendous help here.

Unleashing a World of Possibilities

Overall, remote working has granted me the ability to explore and absorb the plethora of cultures worldwide while growing in my career. It’s been an exhilarating journey filled with its fair share of highs and lows. However, the wealth of experience has been truly life-changing, making every challenge worthwhile. So, should you explore the world while working remotely? Absolutely. This lifestyle might invite unfamiliar obstacles, but it also opens a world of endless opportunities. It allows you to learn, grow, and most importantly, find a unique rhythm in your life.
